Terms
Sponsors in a work visa application usually refer to individuals or corporations that hire foreign workers. Here are some of the requirements of an individual sponsor:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Reside in any location on Indonesian territory for at least the last six months.
- Not undergoing a criminal prosecution
- Not banned by the country
- Possess sufficient funds to financially support the foreign worker
As for corporate sponsorship, the requirements are as follows:
- A registered company in the forms of an individual company, association, foundation, limited company, firm partnership, foreign representatives, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies.
- Not in the middle of a legal dispute.
- Has a sufficient number of active funds to support the foreign worker.
Termination
Just like a work contract, a work visa sponsorship has specific terms and conditions for a termination. A sponsorship can be terminated under the following circumstances:
- The foreign worker leaves Indonesia and does not return.
- The foreign worker switches sponsors.
- The foreign worker passes away.
- The DGI revokes the sponsorship.

Sponsorship Role in the Work Visa Application
Getting employed by an Indonesian company means that you will need to apply for a work visa. To complete this application, you will need a sponsorship letter from your employer. It means that your employer should also provide documents that can support your rights to work in the country.
Here are some of the necessary documents that your sponsor/employer needs to provide:
RPTKA
An Indonesian company that hires a foreign worker must give a valid reason to the government regarding the employment. In this case, a document named Expatriate Placement Plan, or Rencana Penempatan Tenaga Kerja Asing (RPTKA), needs to be provided to support the reasoning.
How does a company get RPTKA? The sponsor/employer will need to obtain the document from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower.
IMTA
In addition to RPTKA, a sponsor/employer also needs to apply for the foreign worker’s Indonesia work permit, called IMTA (Ijin Mempekerjakan Tenaga Kerja Asing). The name translates to Permission to Employ Foreign Workers.
The employer will need to submit the IMTA’s application to the Ministry of Manpower. In this case, the foreign worker must provide the required documents, including education certificates, a work CV, and a passport copy.

Permission to Reside in Indonesia

Apply for KITAS/ITAS
Aside from a work visa, an employee should also have a Temporary Stay Permit to be eligible to reside in Indonesia for a certain period of time. KITAS/ITAS is the name of the stay permit that foreign workers need to apply for at the Immigration Office.
Apply for IKTA
If KITAS/ITAS is the temporary residence permit, then IKTA is the worker’s permit. IKTA stands for Izin Kerja Tenaga Asing, which translates to Foreign Workers Work Permit. The document can be obtained by the company representative or the employer through the application to the Ministry of Manpower.
