What is ITAS?
ITAS stands for Izin Tinggal Terbatas. It means a limited stay permit for foreign nationals in Indonesia. KITAS and ITAS are basically the same thing. ITAS just doesn’t come in the form of a physical card. It is issued electronically instead.
Foreign nationals who wish to visit Indonesia only for tourism purposes may not need this type of stay permit. Usually, ITAS Indonesia is required for foreigners who work in the country and need to stay longer because of duties.
ITAS/KITAS can be given if you provide the necessary documents, such as:
- A request letter from a sponsor.
- A copy of the sponsor’s ID card..
- A copy of every page of your valid passport with the minimum validity of 18 months
- Bank statement; minimum $10k.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
- A copy of RPTKA from the company (for working purposes)
- A recommendation letter from the institution (if needed).

Who is Eligible for ITAS?

Types of ITAS You Can Get
Since foreigners who are qualified for ITAS/KITAS differ, the classification for the stay permit also depends on the holder’s necessity. Hence, there are several types of KITAS or ITAS Indonesia that are available for foreign nationals:
Working ITAS
Typically, foreign nationals who are required to get ITAS/KITAS are workers residing in Indonesia. As a foreign worker, you must be sponsored by a registered Indonesian company or organization.
Note that your working permit validity will affect the duration of your working ITAS/KITAS. The availability also comes with multiple exits and re-entry permits.
Spouse ITAS & Family Reunification ITAS
As a foreign spouse of an Indonesian citizen, you are required to apply for an ITAS/KITAS. However, the spouse’s stay permit will not be able to grant you the ability to work like the working ITAS/KITAS. If you want to work, then you need to have a work permit first.
With your spouse’s ITAS/KITAS, you can stay in Indonesia for a year. This permit is extendable and not limited to the number of entries into the country. As for the other family members, like children, who need to stay with the ITAS/KITAS holder, the application for Family Reunification ITAS/KITAS is also available.
Retirement ITAS
Foreign nationals who are at least 55 years of age can apply for a retirement program under ITAS/KITAS Indonesia. This stay permit does not allow its holders to work or start a business for profit. Hence, it is important to provide proof of funds to accommodate your stay in the country.
Second Home Visa
It’s important to note that Retirement ITAS/KITAS is the term that is no longer used. It has been replaced by a Second Home Visa. This type of stay permit can not just be given to anyone. It means that foreign nationals who apply for this type of permit must have a significant amount of money to fund their retirement life without actively generating income during their stay.
The validity of the retirement ITAS/KITAS is similar to the other types of limited stay permits, which is one year. After a year passes, the permit can be extended up to four times.
Transit ITAS
An ITAS/KITAS can also be given to Indonesian citizens who are in the process of regaining their citizenship. With this permit, you are permitted to stay in the country for about 6 to 12 months.
Maritime Crew ITAS
If you’re a foreigner who works as a ship captain or crew, then you will need an ITAS/KITAS to be allowed to operate in Indonesia. Beside the general documents required for the application, you will also need to get a letter from the ship agency and a recommendation letter from the related institution.
Temporary Stay Visa for Ex Indonesians (C318)
Other than foreign nationals, a temporary stay visa is also available for ex Indonesians who have changed their nationalities but still intend to stay in Indonesia for a certain period of time. Usually the applicant can stay in Indonesia for 180 days, one year, or two years, depending on the application.
