ITAS stands for Izin Tinggal Terbatas, which is a temporary stay permit issued by the Indonesian government for foreigners who intend to stay in Indonesia for an extended period. It allows individuals to stay in Indonesia for a period of up to two years, with the option to extend it for another two years.

Who Will be Given ITAS

The ITAS permit is available for foreigners who enter Indonesian territory with a VITAS (limited stay visa) or convert from a B211 index visa (visit permit) for various purposes, which include:

  1. Investors
  2. Experts
  3. Clergy
  4. Students
  5. Researchers
  6. Reunions with family members who hold a KITAS (temporary stay permit card) 
  7. Tourists over 55 years old (special conditions apply to the categories: (a) Children born in Indonesia to KITAS holders, (b) Ship captains and crew, (c) Foreigners married Indonesian citizens, and (d) Children of foreigners married to Indonesian citizens)
  8. Short-term workers who require a limited-stay permit

How ITAS Become Expired?

An ITAS may expire for various reasons, which include:

  1. Leaving Indonesia without the intention of returning
  2. Obtaining Indonesian citizenship
  3. Converting to a permanent stay permit
  4. Having the permit canceled by the minister or appointed immigration officer.
  5. Expire due to expiration date
  6. Failure to re-enter Indonesia before the re-entry permit expires
  7. The ITAS holder passes away

Requirements to Apply for ITAS

Before applying for an ITAS (Izin Tinggal Terbatas) or temporary stay permit in Indonesia, it is important to familiarize yourself with the requirements needed to obtain this permit. Below are the general requirements:

  1. Letter of guarantee from the guarantor, except for foreign nationals who are lawfully married to Indonesian citizens
  2. Valid and current national passport, along with its photocopy

In essence, the existence of ITAS offers efficiency for the applicants by allowing them to submit the application online. Nevertheless, you are still required to visit the immigration office to pay the fee and receive the passport stamp.

With the improvement of applications through ITAS Online, the temporary stay permit is no longer always given in the form of a card  So, in place of the plastic card, you print out the ITAS yourself.

Next, let’s learn the steps to apply for ITAS Online. The steps include:

  1. Go to IT online and choose the Layanan Izin Tinggal Online button from the Public Services section of the Online Services menu.
  2. Fill in the application form, including your passport number and VITAS authorization number
  3. Following the submission of your application, the immigration office will send you an email containing your application number, name, and passport number
  4. Print the email and visit the immigration office within 30 days of arrival for an interview, data verification, biometric photo, and fingerprint
  5. Show your email to the receptionist to receive a queue number
  6. Bring your passport to get the registration stamp and pay for your ITAS, re-entry permit, and IT management system fee
  7. You will receive another notification email with your ITAS approval letter and attachments, which you can print out yourself

Please note that you still need to visit the immigration office to complete the process and get the visa stamp on your passport, including being interviewed, verifying your data, completing your biometric recording, and paying the fee. However, the previous process has been simplified with the new online system.
